Which running shoes for which type of race?
Road, trail, marathon or 10K: the criteria that really matter when choosing shoes for your target race (cushioning, drop, weight, grip).
Start from the race, not the shoe
One pair does not do it all. Before comparing models, ask yourself three questions: on what terrain, for how long, and at what intensity will you run?
Road: 5K, 10K and half marathon
- Weight: a light shoe (under 250 g) helps you push the pace in shorter races.
- Cushioning: moderate to keep ground feel, more generous beyond one hour of racing.
- Drop (height difference between heel and forefoot): 6 to 10 mm suits most runners; a low drop needs a gradual transition.

Marathon
Over more than three hours, comfort comes first: plenty of cushioning, good foot support and a fit that does not squeeze when your feet swell. Carbon-plated models save fast runners a few seconds per kilometre but are less stable: try them in training, never for the first time on race day.
Trail
- Grip: 4 to 6 mm lugs for muddy or technical trails, shorter ones for runnable paths.
- Protection: toe bumper and a stiffer sole for rocky terrain.
- Distance: on a long trail (over 40 km), cushioning and comfort matter more than weight.
Compare the models
Once these criteria are set, comparing becomes easy. Runometry's guide explains how to choose running shoes criterion by criterion, with matching models.
